A writing assistant is useful when it helps you deliver an accurate draft within the client’s editing rules. Before paying for Grammarly, identify the corrections you need, where you write and whether the client permits generative rewriting.
Review scope, October 8, 2026: This is a documentation-based buying checklist. We do not have retained evidence for the earlier daily-use claim, numerical error-detection result or review score, so those claims have been removed. We have not completed a controlled comparison with other writing tools.
Separate corrections from content generation
Grammarly’s explanation of its AI features distinguishes foundational writing suggestions from optional generative assistance. It describes an account setting for turning off generative AI; that does not disable the underlying technology used for writing suggestions.
Ask the client which kinds of assistance are acceptable before editing a confidential document. Permission to correct spelling does not necessarily include permission to generate paragraphs or submit source material to a third-party service.
| Client requirement | Acceptance check |
|---|---|
| Preserve technical meaning | Review changes to quantities, product names, conditions and commitments |
| Match an agreed voice | Compare suggested wording with the approved style guide |
| Restrict generative rewriting | Record permitted operations and account settings |
| Protect confidential information | Confirm approved tools and data-handling requirements |
| Deliver in a particular editor | Test the actual editor, file format and review workflow |
These are evaluation questions, not claims that every plan meets every requirement.
Run a small editing acceptance test
Use a non-confidential sample that you own: a client email, an explanatory paragraph and a passage with terminology that must remain unchanged. Keep the original and record accepted and rejected suggestions.
- Mark known spelling and grammar issues before running the tool.
- Record useful corrections and unresolved issues.
- Check whether a rewrite changes meaning or adds an unsupported statement.
- Inspect links, headings and formatting in the delivery editor.
- Measure review time as well as correction time.
Do not turn a tiny sample into a universal accuracy percentage. Repeat the test with the documents you actually deliver before committing to a long subscription.
Treat AI detection as a limited signal
Grammarly’s support guidance says AI detectors cannot conclusively establish whether AI produced a text and recommends combining automated signals with human review.
Agree on the writing process and disclosure requirements in advance. Preserve drafts, sources and revision history. Do not promise a particular detector score or treat a low score as proof of originality, accuracy or compliance with a client’s policy.
Check the actual plan and checkout
Use current plans and pricing support to verify the offer available to your account. This page does not lock in a price, feature allowance, seat minimum or renewal term.
| Budget input | Record before upgrading |
|---|---|
| Billing commitment | Amount due now, billing period and renewal date |
| Users | Required seats and total cost |
| Features | Availability and limits for your exact tasks |
| Trial | Eligibility, duration, payment requirement and cancellation deadline if offered |
| Project economics | Subscription allocation plus manual review and revisions |
The official trial guidance says trials are offered periodically and appear on the website when available. A free version and a paid-plan trial are different offers; do not assume a Pro trial is available to everyone.
Decide from your delivery requirements
Consider an upgrade when required features are available, the client permits the workflow and your sample shows a useful result after review. Defer an annual commitment while access, data handling or editing quality remains unresolved.
For alternatives, compare the same brief using the AI writing shortlist and Notion AI buying checklist . Include revision time rather than choosing from unsupported star ratings.
