Ahrefs is a candidate for client SEO work when you need to research websites, investigate queries, inspect technical issues or monitor selected rankings. Choose the task first, then check whether the relevant tool and allowance are included in the plan you would actually buy.

Review scope, October 5, 2026: This guide uses official documentation and a practical evaluation method. We have not performed a controlled comparison of backlink coverage, keyword accuracy or ranking outcomes. Earlier ratings, unverified prices and claims of being tested or unmatched have been removed.

Link disclosure: Ahrefs links here are ordinary vendor sources. We have no verified account-issued Ahrefs referral in this article and do not claim an accepted affiliate relationship. Our linked keyword workflow contains a separately disclosed Mangools referral; reading either guide does not require buying a subscription.

Match the task to the tool

The official tool directory , checked October 5, describes these research capabilities:

TaskTool to investigateQuestion before buying
Inspect a site’s backlink and search profileSite ExplorerDoes the selected plan provide the reports, scope and history you need?
Build a query shortlistKeywords ExplorerIs the target market covered and is the allowance suitable for your workload?
Investigate technical issuesSite AuditCan you crawl the required pages and inspect the flagged issues?
Monitor selected query positionsRank TrackerAre the countries, devices, keyword count and update cadence suitable?
Find pages to investigate for content researchContent ExplorerCan you inspect the underlying pages rather than assuming a metric proves quality?

These are vendor-described functions, not a demonstration that every result will fit your client. Record the specific report and plan you evaluated.

Start with the access you can verify

The official free-access guide describes limited Site Explorer and Site Audit access for websites whose ownership you can prove. On the date checked, it listed 1,000 backlinks and keywords visible at once and 5,000 crawl credits per month per project for those tools.

Those limits do not establish unrestricted competitor research or access to every paid tool. Check the current account and permissions before planning client work. A vendor’s available free product is not evidence that this project has registered, verified its domain or run an audit in it.

Keep estimates, dates and scopes visible

Use the dashboard metric explanation to identify the report and update time associated with a value. Keep the inspected domain or URL, market, device and report date with the result.

A competitor’s traffic estimate is not your website’s Analytics session count. A backlink count does not explain by itself why one page ranks. Difficulty metrics and a promising query are inputs for investigation, not proof that a new article will earn traffic or commission.

Compare a small set of relevant queries with the actual search results. Record whether the searcher appears to need a service, a tutorial or a product decision. Our keyword workflow and shortlist worksheet help keep intent separate from tool estimates.

Evaluate one real client task

Choose a domain you may analyze and a small set of questions you need answered. Save the report date, filters, observations and unresolved questions. Inspect representative underlying pages and links rather than accepting a dashboard total as the complete explanation.

For technical issues, identify the affected URL, confirm the problem and record what changed. Run the relevant check again after the fix. A resolved crawl warning is a different result from Google indexing the page or a visitor converting.

Record your active research and reporting time. If the report cannot answer the client’s question within the required scope, mark that limitation before expanding the subscription.

Check the complete subscription commitment

Use current Ahrefs pricing and the checkout for your account. Record billing period, payment due now, renewal, users, credits or report allowances, history, exports and additional products. Do not assume an API, AI product or extra seat is included just because it appears in the vendor directory.

Allocate costs only across projects you realistically expect to serve. Our project cost worksheet separates cash payment from per-project allocation. This article does not promise a trial, refund, ranking gain or purchase payback.

Compare using the same requirement

Our Ahrefs and Semrush comparison offers a related decision framework. Use the same task, date, market and required report when evaluating alternatives. Without comparable observations, we do not assign a numerical winner or claim one vendor’s data is always more accurate.

Keep access, report usefulness, cost and measured client outcomes as separate decisions. Shortlist the workflow when a reviewed sample resolves the task; defer buying when the plan or evidence remains unclear.
